Extreme drought calls for extra soil management

As planting season starts to fully get rolling here soon in Iowa, farmers are thinking about how to handle extreme drought conditions that can hinder crop development. While farmers have been dealing with drought conditions for almost 4 years straight now, there’s still work that can be done to prepare crops for the lack of soil moisture. Adam Sibbel, senior technical agronomist with Indigo Ag, said there are practices and products- like Indigo Ag’s biological lineup- that can help tackle these issues.

Most of the precipitation we get here in Iowa comes in the form of storms, so Sibbel said we need to be able to catch that precipitation when it falls.

If there’s any silver lining to dealing with adverse weather conditions, it’s that they provide valuable data- and even new traits- for the next generation of genetics. Sibbel said they’ve captured those traits in many of their products.

On top of the weather issues we’ll face this year, Sibbel said the warm winter we just had will almost certainly lead to heightened pest issues.
