House Ag Chair GT Thompson has set a May 23rd markup date for his GOP farm bill proposal, but there is still a long road ahead for the proposal.

NCBA’s Executive Director of Government Affairs Allison Rivera says she is encouraged that House Ag Chair GT Thompson has set a late May markup date for his GOP farm bill proposal, but there is still a long way to the finish line.

Rivera told NCBA’s Beltway Beef podcast that the Cattlemen have three areas they would like to see strengthened in the farm bill.

Rivera says conservation programs also remain a priority for NCBA. She says despite trying to remain optimistic, partisan politics and the calendar will make the farm bill final push difficult.

The question remains, will either Ag committee produce a farm bill with enough bipartisan support to win majorities in each chamber? If they can thread that needle it will need to be done quickly and in an election year.
