Yesterday, we shared the thoughts of Growth Energy’s Emily Skor about the state of things in the ethanol sector. One of the things that she mentioned she was most concerned about was what she perceived to be the waning support of lawmakers to find a permanent solution for year-round E15 sales. The only way this solution can be reached is for Congress to pass it into law.
When I last spoke with Senator Joni Ernst in her D.C. office, I asked her how things look for the future of E15 legislation. She replied that there is a lot of work that needs to be done. However, she says that it just isn’t getting done, even though the Biden Administration says that they want to find solutions, we aren’t seeing progress that would mean anything.
We talked about the GREET model that came out while I was in Washington. Many biofuels supporters have expressed concern with the program. They are concerned that there isn’t a clear path forward for biofuels to be a part of Sustainable Aviation Fuel and that the guidelines are going to be prohibitive for farm-raised products to be a part of the program.
The GREET Model guidelines that were released two weeks ago were for the 2023 & 2024 tax years. A new program is being developed for 2025 and beyond. Biofuels supporters hope that they will have a bigger seat at the table going forward.
