The Food Bank of Iowa hosted a group of volunteers on Wednesday to package 2,000 springtime meal boxes.

The event was made possible through a $100,000 donation from the Murphy Family Foundation and a partnership with Fareway. While 2,000 meals may sound like a lot of work, the time passed quickly. Music was playing over the speakers, and everyone was obviously having a great time. Emily Toribio, Fareway?s director of corporate outreach and communications, even said that they had an incredibly easy time getting volunteers lined up for the day.

As a partner, Fareway made a huge contribution of food for the event. Each meal kit included ham, potatoes, canned fruit, canned green beans, Jell-O, Bisquick, and a box of brownie or cookie mix. Fareway CEO Reynolds Cramer talked about the story behind the event and the mutual respect between Fareway and the Murphy Family Foundation.

Of course, the Murphy Family Foundation openly reciprocates that same level of respect and admiration. Mike Murphy was in attendance at the packing event. He talked about the partnership between the foundation, the Food Bank of Iowa, and Fareway.

The remaining funds from the Murphy Family Foundation?s donation allowed the Food Bank of Iowa to purchase 8 to 12 additional pallets of non-perishables that are already on inventory for their pantry partners in 55 counties around the state.
