Previously dry soils are now too wet in some areas

While we have received a lot of rain recently, it still has not been enough to rid the state of drought yet. In fact, large portions of the state are still in drought conditions. Mark Licht, Iowa State University professor of agronomy and ISU Extension and Outreach cropping systems specialist, said it’s still a massive improvement from this time last year.

Northwest Iowa was one of the worst regions for drought, but Licht said that’s now one of the most improved areas.

One of the concerns with this amount of rain, though, is that the crop standability will suffer.

Licht added that, due to the lack of workable planting days, some of this crop may be getting planted into suboptimal field conditions.
