Pork industry eyes impact of MAHA guidelines

The Make America Healthy Again (MAHA) Report has finally delivered its long-awaited recommendations, and agriculture is watching closely. The findings are expected to influence how federal agencies shape farm policy, food production, and the role of agriculture in meeting future nutrition goals. For producers, the report could carry both opportunities and challenges as its ideas move toward implementation.

Dr. Ashley Johnson, Director of Food Policy for the National Pork Producers Council, has been following the process closely. She says the newly released report did not deliver the sweeping restrictions that some had feared, but it does outline a framework that could still carry big implications for farmers.

One of the most notable pieces of the MAHA recommendations involves a major restructuring within the federal government. Johnson says the creation of a new agency could reshape how agriculture is monitored, with expanded oversight tied to health and environmental testing. That, she adds, is an area where producers will need to stay especially alert.

Another area tied closely to the MAHA report is nutrition policy. Johnson notes that upcoming updates to the Dietary Guidelines for Americans will address the growing debate over ultra-processed foods. She says the way those terms are defined could create confusion for consumers and policymakers, with ripple effects across how farm products are viewed in federal nutrition and feeding programs.

NPPC’s concern is that products like bacon and sausage could be lumped into the same category as candy or pop, creating confusion about their place in the diet. That is an issue the industry will be looking at closely, and we will examine it further in a future report.
