Methods to combat heat stress in cattle

With most of the country experiencing on and off instances of extreme heat in recent weeks, producers are working hard to prepare for a potentially long and hot summer for their cattle. Producers need to be preparing for ways to mitigate heat stress in their animals with shade, sprinklers, and bedding says Alfredo DiConstanzo of University of Nebraska Extension. DiConstanzo says that management decisions can make a big difference in lowering heat stress.

He says that although there are some obvious solutions to battling heat stress, you need to be cautious with some methods including sprinklers.

He adds that heat stress is not the only threat to cattle during the hot summer months. Insects also need to be accounted for and dealt with, so they do not increase the problems for cattle.

That was Alfredo DiConstanzo of University of Nebraska Extension.
