Corn farmers are seeing the effects of Southern Rust as they harvest

Harvest is continuing to roll along across the state, and while corn yields may initially appear disappointing, the numbers that are coming in are still good. This is made especially true when you consider the presence of diseases this year as well. Southern Iowa LG Seeds Agronomist Bryant Luers said soybeans look good in his area, but farmers are seeing the effects of late season diseases in corn.

While plenty of other diseases were present in corn as usual, Luers said Southern Rust was the biggest yield-limiting disease this year.

Unfortunately, Luers said stalk health is not great in his area, with many farmers seeing low standability in their corn.

Southern Rust is not a disease that Iowa farmers typically have to deal with, and it hopefully won’t be a problem again for a while if we have a nice cold winter. However, that doesn’t mean farmers should not be taking lessons from this year’s disease issues.
