Silver linings to rainy weather planting delays

As we finish up the 200th consecutive week of drought in Iowa, there’s actually some hope to be found, as the drought conditions are very much trending in the right direction. The recent storms have dumped off plentiful amounts of rainfall for the soils across the state to absorb. Iowa State Climatologist Justin Glisan gave an update on the latest drought monitor.

While the planting delays are annoying, Glisan said it’s important to get that moisture in the ground now, as this summer could be a warm one.

Plus, even with the amount of rain we’ve gotten, a good amount of planting progress has still been made in Iowa.

It’s impossible to predict severe weather, but there are tools that can at least give us a better guess. Glisan said that we might be fortunate enough soon to see less severe storms passing through.

Glisan added that farmers should get in touch and offer their observations so the USDA drought monitor can be as accurate as possible.
