A new voter poll shows record support for all year around higher-ethanol fuel blend. Geoff Cooper, President and CEO of the Renewable Fuels Association, wants to use the data to advance year-round E15 legislation through the Senate. He explains that voter support for E15 is driven by high gas prices and global instability- particularly in the Middle East- and that E15 offers a lower-cost alternative to traditional fuels.
Cooper said the support for E15 is bipartisan, which underscores the importance of getting it passed for year-round sales.
While E15 is currently available at about 5,000 gas stations, it still reporesents a smaller share of the market. Cooper said he believes that E15’s affordability makes it more appealing to both consumers and lawmakers.
Beyond the potential savings at the pump, Cooper said E15 is the most tested fuel in U.S. history, and research findings indicate significant emission reductions when compared to standard fuel.
One of the most common concerns about E15 is its impact on fuel efficiency. However, Cooper said the impact in negligible or even positive for some vehicles.
Cooper said the message is resonating well beyond traditional ethanol-producing states, which is helping families save money at the pump.
The RFA is urging the Senate to take up the legislation that would allow year-round nationwide sales of E15. The House has already approved the bill, and advocates are now looking for a Senate vehicle to advance it.
