Beef on dairy success brings unexpected market challenges

The dairy industry is facing an unusual situation. Demand for dairy products remains strong, exports continue to grow, and consumers are increasingly looking for high-protein foods. However, abundant milk supplies are putting pressure on cheese prices. Surprisingly, part of the reason has more to do with the beef market than the dairy case.

Corey Geiger, dairy economist with the CoBank Knowledge Exchange, says the growing value of beef-on-dairy calves has significantly changed the revenue picture for dairy producers. That additional income is encouraging farmers to retain older cows, contributing to the largest U.S. dairy herd in 34 years.

Geiger says the strong beef-on-dairy market is being fueled by historically tight cattle supplies. He points to several milestones that illustrate just how limited the nation’s cattle inventory has become.

While additional milk production has weighed on cheese prices, Geiger says demand for dairy products is not the problem. U.S. dairy exports have continued to reach new highs, particularly when it comes to cheese.

In May 2025, U.S. cheese exports reached 110 million pounds for the first time. Geiger says monthly exports have remained above that level since, reaching 140 million pounds in February 2026.

Beyond traditional dairy consumption, changing consumer habits are creating new opportunities for the industry. Geiger points to the growing use of GLP-1 weight-loss medications as one factor driving demand for high-quality protein.

Consumers using those medications are often eating fewer calories while prioritizing protein intake. That has helped create additional demand for products like Greek yogurt, cottage cheese, whey protein isolates, and high-protein dairy shakes.

Geiger says the long-term outlook for dairy demand remains positive, particularly as consumers continue to seek out protein-rich foods. However, the industry is also adjusting to abundant milk production and expanding processing capacity.

For dairy producers, the challenge will be balancing those growing opportunities with the pressure that additional milk supplies are placing on prices. While beef-on-dairy has created a valuable new revenue stream, its success is also contributing to some unexpected challenges for the dairy market.
