New active ingredients face long road to farmers

Uncertainty brings problems for everyone in agriculture that is trying to build long-term plans and make long-term decisions. In the case of companies that are trying to bring new active ingredients to market and give farmers new tools to battle weeds, pests, and disease uncertainty with the regulatory process can also create issues.

Val Dolcini is the head of public affairs for Syngenta, and he tells the Iowa Agribusiness Radio Network that the process from start to finish for delivering a new active ingredient is a long one. Dolcini says that regulatory streamlining is a way in which new tools can be delivered to farmers in a quicker manner.

Switching gears to the topic of the farm bill, Dolcini has some optimism that a farm bill could still get passed before the end of the calendar year.

In the pesticide industry Dolcini says that consolidation has led to a reduced amount of competition. He points out that less competition has resulted in less innovation with new products being brought to market.
