Vice President J.D. Vance and U.S. Secretary of Agriculture Brooke Rollins today announced eight fertilizer manufacturing projects that will receive funding through the U.S. Department of Agriculture’s (USDA) Fertilizer Investment & Expansion for Long-Term Domestic Supply (FIELDS) Program. The eight selected projects represent over $1.34 billion in total proposed investment, which includes roughly $573 million in proposed funding from the USDA. This move comes as farmers navigate historically high fertilizer prices and shrinking price margins. Secretary Rollins said this investment will strengthen fertilizer production here in the U.S., which will reduce the country’s dependence on foreign suppliers and increase the long-term availability of fertilizer.

Secretary Rollins said this investment is particularly focused on projects that will actually come to fruition and provide measurable production outcomes.

While she acknowledged that she can’t guarantee specific fertilizer price decreases, Secretary Rollins said those prices are trending in the right direction, and there will be a significant price drop once those projects are completed. As of right now, the projects are estimated to be completed in 2027-2028.

One of the eight selected projects is TalusAg, which will deploy twenty modular ammonia manufacturing units across 11 locations in seven states, including Iowa. Those units are expected to produce roughly 130,000 tons of anhydrous ammonia annually. For more information, visit rd.usda.gov.
