Late plantings may have saved us from some storm damage

The past few weeks were largely uneventful in terms of weather conditions, but last Friday reminded us that things can change in the span of a few minutes. A powerful thunderstorm system traveled through central Iowa, bringing large hail and intense rainfall with it. This was seen in full effect at the Iowa State Fairgrounds, where the rain even caused some flash flooding. However, Iowa State Climatologist Dr. Justin Glisan said there were still parts of the state that didn?t get enough rain.

Severe weather events bring us much of the precipitation that we receive every year, but they can also bring damage to our crops. Fortunately, it seems that we?ve largely avoided most of the potential wind and hail damage so far this season. Glisan said the late plantings may have actually saved us from the worst of the storm damage.

Last year, we were having drought concerns, but then we got some timely rains that helped the crops come around. Glisan said we could see a similar story this year.
