As most of us know, the weather this season has taken us for a whirlwind. We have gone through major storms, high winds, heavy amounts of rain, and too little amounts of rain. But how has this affected the crops in certain parts of the state?

Iowa State University Extension Field Agronomist for Region 3 Angela Rieck-Hinz talks about how the crops are progressing this growing season, and how the crops are continuing to look great. She mentions how like most of us, the crops need that occasional cool drink of water to keep us hydrated and healthy.

Rieck-Hinz notes that thanks to the lovely Iowa weather, we of course are dealing with more centralized rainfall rather than those scattered more even showers. She talks about how we are needing the rain to help those crops move right along in the growing stages.

Rainfall or lack thereof isn?t the only thing affecting our crops. Rieck-Hinz mentions some of the pests and diseases that her region of the state is experiencing thus far. She even talks about a field she is sitting across and a few pests that are affecting the corn in front of her.

Rieck-Hinz notes some things that producers need to keep an eye on throughout the growing season. She mentions what you need to be doing, evaluating, and preventing in your fields and different ways you can go about them and use them as management tools for future years.
