Grain bags find second life through recycling

It’s that time of year when harvest is winding down and farmyards across the Midwest are filling up with leftover grain bags. They’ve served their purpose, but now comes the question of what to do with them. Most grain bags are designed for single use, and that means disposal or recycling becomes the next challenge and opportunity.

Chris DeClerk, an irrigation specialist with Delta Plastics, says his company is making it easier for farmers to recycle those massive bags instead of sending them to the landfill. Through Delta’s sister company, The Revolution Company, they will travel anywhere in the Midwest to pick up used grain bags if they’re gathered together and properly prepared.

DeClerk says the company wants to help producers safely and affordably manage leftover material that often piles up after harvest. While some farmers may reuse the plastic, these bags can stretch more than 200 feet long, making them cumbersome to handle. He explained how farmers can prepare them for pickup.

Those used plastics get a new lease on life, often turned into household trash bags and other everyday products.

He adds that wrapping the rolled plastic in twine helps with loading and transport.

DeClerk and his team at The Revolution Company hope more farmers across the region will take advantage of the program and give their used grain bags a responsible new purpose. More information about Delta Plastics and their recycling program can be found at DeltaPlastics.com.
