Farmers will be able to use new genetics in their Xitavo soybean seeds this year from BASF. Prior to this growing season, only four companies comprised 98% of the soybean breeding industry. Bill Backhaus, BASF soybean agronomist, said the new genetics are exclusive to the Xitavo portfolio.
Since this past winter was mild, insects are likely going to be an even bigger problem than usual. Fortunately, Backhaus said the Xitavo soybean line is prepared to deal with the top soybean pests, like soybean cyst nematode.
Backhaus said he will even be doing trials on his own farm with the new traits they are developing.
