Mexico this week removed all pseudorabies (PRV) related restrictions on U.S. pork offal products. As U.S. Meat Export Federation (USMEF) Vice President of Economic Analysis Erin Borror explains, this comes as a big relief since the temporary restrictions had significant financial impacts on U.S. pork exporters, as Mexico is the U.S.’s second-largest market for variety meats.
Borror says this lift comes after a nonstop push from the industry for the U.S. government to understand the importance of addressing this matter. For her, this is a massive win for the industry, especially since more countries followed Mexico’s lead.
Although China, the largest destination for U.S. pork variety meat, has not formally imposed PRV-related import restrictions, it is requiring 100% testing of offal shipments from the United States. This is an additional obstacle for the U.S. variety meat because the product takes three to five weeks to clear, resulting in significant demurrage costs.
