Global wars, supply chain issues, and volatile market prices have created a difficult ag economy across the board. Farmers and producers are searching for solutions that can help them to not only navigate this economy but improve their financial standing as well. Dave Muhlbauer, Democratic candidate for Iowa Lieutenant Governor, said the ag economy is critical to the state’s entire economy.
Muhlbauer said he and Rob Sand, the Democratic candidate for Iowa Governor, just rolled out their Opportunities for All plan, which includes their policy proposals to support Iowa’s farm economy.
One of the biggest issues that is growing in rural communities is the lack of accessible healthcare facilities. As more facilities close, healthcare deserts grow, and many rural Iowans have to travel even further to get the medical care they need. Muhlbauer said he has seen this issues firsthand as a member of the Manning hospital board.
Plenty of farmers have struggled with conservation in Iowa, and Muhlbauer has faced his own issues on his operation. Today, Muhlbauer said he enjoys using cover crops to benefit his whole farming operation, and he would like to see more support for Iowa farmers who are making an effort to adopt new and beneficial conservation practices.
Food insecurity is also an issue that impacts many Iowans- in fact, 1 in 8 Iowans face some form of it. Muhlbauer he wants to strengthen food-to-table programs and connect Iowa producers with people who need the food they grow.
