Upper Midwest experiences another derecho

In case you weren?t around the upper Midwest on Tuesday, it was hot. It was one of those days that just thinking about going outside made you sweat. Days like that have been often coming this summer, but the one thing that we know is that eventually heat waves break. That is what happened with some thunderstorm activity on Tuesday night.

As we approach the second anniversary of the derecho that occurred on August 10th, 2020, most Iowans remember what it was like to have those strong winds hammering us hard and then quickly moving off. This type of storm is called a derecho, where winds reach hurricane levels on the prairie. This time around, Iowa caught just a small part of a multistate storm. American Farm Bureau Federation Government Affairs Director RJ Layher talks about who was impacted on the Northern Plains.

That means that producers in this area have a small window of opportunity to file any claims of damage or loss. The deadline is 72 hours after the event. Layher says that producers need to contact their insurance agents asap.

This storm serves as yet another reminder that the bushels can?t be counted until they are in the bin.
