State Fair showcases the heart of Iowa agriculture

by | Aug 12, 2025 | 5 Ag Stories, News

Yesterday, we celebrated the grit and legacy of Iowa’s Century and Heritage Farm families, but that is just one piece of the agricultural spotlight at the Iowa State Fair. Across the fairgrounds, agriculture takes center stage in ways both big and really big, from the Super Bull to the Big Boar, the Big Ram, and even the Big Pumpkin. These crowd pleasers draw fairgoers in, but behind the spectacles is a deeper purpose, showing the diversity and vitality of Iowa’s number one industry. It is a chance for producers to connect with the public and keep telling the story of farming, one conversation at a time.

At the center of the exposition is the Iowa Department of Agriculture and Land Stewardship (IDALS). Secretary Mike Naig says the fair is the greatest opportunity to bridge the gap between the state’s urban and rural populations. It is a time to showcase the best of Iowa agriculture while also educating fairgoers about the people, practices, and progress that keep the industry moving forward.

The first and easiest place to make that connection is through the food. Vendors across the fairgrounds are offering something for every taste preference, from traditional favorites to creative new dishes. Many are featuring Iowa-grown products and highlighting their partnership with the Choose Iowa program, giving fairgoers a direct taste of the state’s agricultural bounty.

Another way to make that connection is by showcasing the work being done to make production safer and more responsible. Environmental concerns are real and deserve attention, and agriculture has a role to play in addressing them. Through events like the Environmental Leadership Awards, the fair highlights and celebrates those who are taking responsibility and leading the way toward a stronger and more environmentally responsible future for Iowa agriculture.

Finally, you cannot walk through the fair without seeing the impressive 4-H and FFA projects on display. From livestock to crafts to tractor restorations, each exhibit reflects hard work, skill, and dedication. The atmosphere is filled with pride, friendly competition, and valuable life lessons that will serve these young people well beyond the fairgrounds.

The Iowa State Fair is more than an annual tradition; it is our greatest opportunity to share the story of agriculture. It is a chance to build understanding and trust with consumers while opening their eyes to the many fascinating aspects of the industry that drives our state. From the barns to the food stands to the award stages, it is a celebration that both urban and rural Iowans can take pride in.
