Regional Agronomist: Downed Corn Has Been Common This Year

A regional agronomist said he has seen spots of downed corn across the central region of Iowa this year. LG Seeds central region agronomist Greg Peters said even with some downed corn, overall yields look decent.

?Here in the central part it is good except for the areas we had wet spots and heavy rain. Looking at yields some are surprised some are not. It just depends on where you are at for the region. The average right now is around 190 to 200 bushels but depends how wet the farms are,? Peters.

Peters said even though yields vary from place to place, one common thing he sees is downed corn.

?We?re seeing down corn every time we have these high winds like today. It goes down worse than it has. We knew that stalk rots were going to be an issue this year. Yields have been high for the environment that we?ve been in and generally you are going to give up something for these yields and this year it has been stalk quality more than anything. Differences in hybrids makes a difference because some are good at Rhine standing and some are not and you can really tell a difference,? Peters said.

Peters adds when it comes to beans they were pretty much a surprise to most farmers. He says yields came in better than expected. Peters said northern Iowa has been a huge surprise and believes yields are better because farmers up there had a drier summer than the rest of the state.
