Aside from a few storms earlier this spring, the weather has been mostly wide open for planting season. With most of the crops planted at this point, farmers are now waiting for some timely rains. Southwest Iowa Beck’s Agronomist Nate Meyer said the planting window was so wide this year that he had some producers finish planting over ten days ago already.
While the weather has been mostly cooperative for planting, Meyer said most of the region is in dire need of some rain.
Some of the earlier-planted crops were slow to emerge, but Meyer said emergence is looking really nice across southwest Iowa.
Meyer added that, according to years of research, it’s important for farmers to get their corn in by May 15th because yields start to fall off after that.
