Heat dome to cover Iowa and much of the Midwest

July has been a cool and wet month so far, which has been great for the corn crops going through pollination. Warm weather is set to return, though, with a heat dome preparing to form over the lower Midwest. Dr. Justin Glisan, state climatologist for Iowa, said it still won’t be exceedingly warm.

Even though the temperatures won’t get excessively high, Glisan did say that the heat index could become intense. This is dangerous for both livestock and humans.

Heat domes are also known for diverting potential storms away from the affected area. However, Glisan did note that heavy storms called “ridge riders” can form.
