Food Bank of Iowa receives fourth annual Meat the Need donation

This morning, Fareway Stores and the Iowa Farm Bureau delivered 25,000 pounds of protein to the Food Bank of Iowa for the fourth consecutive year of the Meat the Need initiative. The donation will provide 100,000 servings of high-quality protein to Iowans who are food insecure. Dos Rios taco meat (12,000 lbs.) was secured through a partnership with Two Rivers, while the ground pork portion (13,000 lbs.) was purchased from Webster City Custom Meats. Food Bank of Iowa President and CEO Tami Nielsen said this donation is especially important, as protein is one of the most expensive products to get from the grocery store right now.

With demand for food at record levels, Nielsen said this donation will make its way out their doors very quickly.

Iowa Farm Bureau President Brent Johnson said they frequently partner with Fareway at both the state and local level, and this is one of the most critical partnerships they have together.

Johnson said this donation also exemplifies “Iowa Nice” and showcases the collective desire of Iowa farmers to help out their neighbors who are in need.

Jeff Cook, Vice President of Retail Market Operations for Fareway Stores, Inc., echoed the same sentiments and said they are grateful to be able to provide some help in this time of unprecedented need.
