When most people think of good, strong corn, they think of a towering plant. While that certainly is a correct assumption, what if we could have short corn that was just as productive? It may seem like a simple change, but shorter corn plants can offer a lot of benefits when compared to much taller varieties. Shorter corn may not seem that different, but Tichich said it offers several key agronomic benefits.
Despite the shorter height, Smart Corn will mature at the same rate as other varieties. Tichich said that, early on, the Smart Corn will look identical to taller corn, but it will start to exhibit that smaller height around the V6 growing stage.
Smart Corn even has a comparable number of ears per plant. Tichich said the distance between nodes is shorter as well, which allows for more ears on the stalk.
Tichich also talked about how this corn came to be and what producers can expect from it in the future.
