Using soil tests to adjust nutrient applications in 2026

When it comes to having a successful crop season, soil nutrition is key. But it’s not just about having the proper nutrients in the soil- farmers need to focus on making sure those nutrients are available to the crops at the right time. Derek Emerine, national agronomist for Helena Agri-Enterprises, said soil and plant tissue tests can help farmers make proper adjustments to their crop nutrition programs.

Emerine said most farmers are already diligent about maintaining the proper levels for the most well-known nutrients. However, micronutrients are proving to be a bit of an issue.

Emerine said it’s important that these micronutrients are applied at the right time as well.

As we enter 2026, Emerine said farmers should take a good look at the data from soil and plant tissue tests and work with their trusted partners to develop a strong plan.
