Proper grain storage is critical during these hot summer months, especially with the heat dome that is sitting over most of Iowa. Effective management of a few key factors can give farmers the flexibility to hold onto their stored grain until market conditions are the most favorable to make some sales. Randy Sheley, grain conditioning product specialist with GSI, said temperature and moisture are the two most important things to keep track of.
If it is affordable, Sheley said he recommends over drying grain for long-term storage.
Sheley said aeration is also important in keeping grain properly stored.
Sheley added that elevated grain temperatures are often a sign that there is a bigger problem.
