When driving through the countryside this season you have probably been doing a lot scouting from the highway and noticed that the crops in Iowa have looked excellent. That has been reflected in the crop condition ratings with this year’s crop appearing to be poised for a strong finish and big yields.
However, despite the favorable weather conditions for crop growth and development, that same weather has set the table for fungal disease pressure. Mark Storr is a BASF technical service representative, and he says that tar spot is one of the biggest threats to corn.
Storr mentions several other diseases that growers need to be wary of based on the weather conditions.
In areas where growers have received excess rainfall, Storr says that nitrogen loss concerns could necessitate additional nitrogen applications.
