Farm Progress Show Interview: Colin Dutcheshen, Heads Up Plant Protectants

Heads Up Plant Protectants is an agricultural company that manufactures biological seed treatments to help farmers prevent fungal and bacterial diseases. Their products are proven and registered to activate producers? plants natural defenses which enables full season disease resistance, says vice president Colin Dutcheshen.

?At the show we?re showcasing our product Heads Up Seed Treatment,? said Dutcheshen. ?It?s a biological offering. It runs about $3 per acre. It?s a nice add on that adds additional protection to your seed care package. This is something completely different than your run of the mill seed treatments. It?s a different mode of action. What we can do is help farmers with a history of white mold and sudden death ? because they are very hard diseases to get rid of once they are in your soils ? with an additional form of protection as a low-cost seed treatment.?

Heads Up?s signature product is commercially available across the United States and is the first EPA registered seed treatment for the prevention of SDS and white mold in soybeans. Dutcheshen says SDS and white mold are two of the most important fungal diseases in soybean production in the US, affecting 40 to 50 million acres in the north-central region.

?It seems like white mold and sudden death are always lurking,? said Dutcheshen. ?There are counties that have it. It?s been drier through the Dakotas and Iowa this year, but definitely in Illinois and into Michigan, Ohio and Indiana we are hearing about accounts of significant disease pressure.?

Applying Heads Up Plant Protectant to high quality seed helps prime those varieties to fight harder against soil borne pathogens all season long. Learn more by visiting HeadsUpST.com.
