Grassley sows doubt on farm bill’s Senate prospects

The U.S. House of Representatives passed its version of the farm bill on April 30th by a 224–200 vote. With passage through the House, this is the furthest a farm bill has advanced since 2018. However, despite passage in the House, the farm bill still has a long way to go to make it through the Senate. United States Senator Chuck Grassley (R-IA) says his recent conversations with Senate Ag Chair John Boozman have left him less than optimistic for a Senate farm bill.

Grassley says the House version of the bill is probably the starting point for the Senate to work with.

The farm bill passed by the House will keep in place SNAP anti‑fraud provisions that Democrats resisted in the president’s tax package last summer. That would force states with high-error rates to cover more SNAP costs.

Grassley says the disagreement between the parties over SNAP funding could derail the House version of the farm bill in the Senate.

Senator Grassley made his comments on Friday during his weekly ag conference call with farm broadcasters and reporters.
