Using MLV vaccines in swine herds

by | Jul 6, 2023 | 5 Ag Stories, News

Modified-live virus (MLV) vaccines have been available for decades, and they?ve proven to be especially critical in the swine industry for PRRS control. Dr. JD Fiechtner, senior account veterinarian for swine at Boehringer Ingelheim, explained how MLV vaccines work and what they specialize in.

When it comes to PRRS, Dr. Fiechtner said it?s especially important that swine obtain cell-mediated immunity, which can be obtained via MLV vaccines.

Dr. Fiechtner also discussed the pros and cons of using MLV vaccines.

In order to stave off infections in swine herds, Dr. Fiechtner said that MLV vaccines need to be administered 3-4 weeks prior to any exposure to potential wild-type infections.

Withdrawal periods aren?t a huge concern since MLV vaccines are usually administered early in the pig?s life, but it is important to keep track of what other vaccines are being administered in the same timeframe.

However, Dr. Fiechtner said that one vaccine isn?t going to magically keep your herd healthy- swine producers need to have a thorough health plan for their herds.
