Tyson Foods has signaled that it will permanently close its pork packing plant in Perry in late June. Tyson is the biggest employer in the city of Perry and the closing of the facility will leave 1,276 plant workers without jobs.

The Worker Adjustment and Retraining Notification (WARN) Act requires employers with 100 or more employees to give 60 calendar day written notice when there is a plant closing or mass layoff. Tyson Foods has submitted a written notice which indicates that the plant will close on June 28th and will affect 1,276 employees.

United States Senator Chuck Grassley (R-IA) was asked on Tuesday during his weekly conference call about the closing of the Tyson plant.

The plant closure announcement comes just two months after a school shooting in Perry which left two dead and six wounded.

Grassley says that in addition to workers at the plant losing employment, producers in the area are also losing the closest processing facility for their livestock.

Tyson will be permanently closing the facility in Perry and Grassley says it leaves thousands with unanswered questions.

Senator Grassley made his comments on Tuesday during his weekly ag conference call with farm broadcasters and reporters.
