Yesterday, Hy-Vee donated over $1.5 million to the Food Bank of Iowa as part of the 100 Million Meals Challenge. This donation was made possible through the customers who round up at Hy-Vee cash registers as well as Hy-Vee’s partnerships with food manufacturers. Over the past 20 months, the campaign provided more than 102 million meals to 19 Feeding America food banks across 9 states. Tami Nielsen, interim CEO of the Food Bank of Iowa, said this donation will benefit families across the 55 counties that the Food Bank of Iowa serves.
Nielsen said many people feel especially generous during the holiday season, but the battle against food insecurity is year-round.
Dawn Buzynski, assistant vice president of communications with Hy-Vee, said that 100 percent of the money donated through customers rounding up at the register will be used to purchase meals for those who are food insecure.
This campaign is a great example of how even the smallest donation can be used to make a big change.
