We have talked at length this year about HPAI or what is commonly known as the bird flu. It is a disease that doesn’t discriminate over which of the animals are infected. That is why it has been so important to take the outbreaks, prevention, and consequences seriously. The Iowa Department of Ag knows that farms of every size matter in our state. This isn’t just about large-scale farms with thousands of birds, it has an impact on smaller farms and backyard flocks as well.
Iowa Ag Secretary Mike Naig talks about the situation as we approach the colder temps of winter and the hope that the outbreak will die down.
Naig says that there is a responsibility to take HPAI seriously no matter what size the flock is affected. It is the due diligence of all producers to do what they can to get out in front of the situation and mitigate the spread.
