As we get ready to get going on the 2023 growing season, the biggest question people want to be answered is what do farmers intend to plant. It sets the tone in the markets. It tells the rest of the global marketplace what we hope to have available, and it informs input companies about what they can expect for business this year.
Farm Futures just released their annual survey of planting intentions, and they found that the market prices and input costs are driving many farmers? decisions this spring. Jacqueline Holland is a grain market analyst with Farm Futures, and she talks about their findings for 2023.
Holland says that the numbers they saw from wheat were not quite what they expected to see for this year.
Many farmers had their plans locked in well before the new year.
Holland says the U.S. is looking at the potential for a bumper soybean crop if outside forces are not a major factor.
Of course, a survey is just a snapshot of the producers polled. We won?t have hard data until the planters roll in a few months.
