Iowa?s farms are full of big, powerful machinery because we mostly have big jobs that need to be done. There are, however, some jobs that don?t require a roaring diesel engine. Sometimes, a smaller, quieter tractor can do the job just as well, if not even better. Solectrac is a California-based company that produces electric tractors, which were on display at this year?s Farm Progress Show. Martha Hennigan, Solectrac?s director of sales and marketing, detailed some of the benefits of using an electric tractor.

Despite their size, Hennigan said these tractors offer plenty of power and torque with a much smaller engine, which makes them great for chores and hobby farming.

Hennigan said they want to hear from farmers in order to help them find ways to implement these tractors into their operations.

Hennigan added that, since electric tractors don?t idle, they are very efficient with their energy usage.

Hennigan mentioned another benefit to electric tractors is their lower emissions.

Hennigan also talked about what farmers can expect to see from Solectrac in the future.
