U.S. Senator Chuck Grassley held his weekly conference call with reporters on Tuesday and spoke about the current state of his bill that would address foreign ownership of U.S. farmland.
Grassley was the original author of the Agricultural Foreign Investment Disclosure Act, which requires foreign nationals to report their U.S. agricultural holdings to the U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA). That bill was written into law in 1978.
Grassley says there are still some problems with identifying land ownership.
The bill is called the Farmland Security Act and was introduced in July by Senators Grassley (R-IA) and Tammy Baldwin (D-WI). The Senators say that the goal of the bill is ?to protect American farmers, rural communities, and our food supply chains.?
