Pork has positive effect on economy

Tough economic times have hit the whole country hard. Prices of food and fuel have risen and put many people in a tough situation. Just yesterday we received information of an increases in requests for food assistance in the state of Iowa, according to the Iowa Food Bank.

We look to where we see strength and support in the economy. In a state like Iowa, agriculture tends to lead the way. Prices for grains have been good, but those prices have been offset by higher input costs. However, there is a bright spot in all of this. The pork industry has lately been found to be one of the pillars helping to keep things supported in these uncertain times.

The National Pork Producers Council (NPPC) released a new report showing the economic impact that pork production is having on the overall economy. NPPC Economist Holly Cook tells us what the study found.

NPPC President Terry Wolters talks about the trends the study documents, and the impact the industry has had on the supply chain.

Holly Cook points out that exports have been critical to these successes.

Wolters commends pork producers on their willingness to adapt to the changing markets over the past few decades.
