Iowa Secretary of Agriculture Mike Naig was a special guest for the Iowa Farmers Union?s recent virtual lunch and learn program.
During the forum, Secretary Naig was asked by IFU members if the Iowa Department of Agriculture and Land Stewardship plans to continue offering the cover crop insurance demonstration project after 2021. Secretary Naig said ?absolutely.?
IDALS offers the program through an agreement with the USDA Risk Management Agency. The program provides an additional crop insurance premium reduction for cover crop acres from producers who enroll through this program. IDALS provides $5 per acre for cover crops to eligible participants.
The time period for accepting 2021 applications is now closed, however, Naig again assured the forum?s participants that the program will continue next year. Farmers are encouraged to visit their local USDA service center offices to learn more about other cost-share funding available to support the implementation of conservation practices.
