For the 4th consecutive year, the Murphy Foundation has partnered with Fareway to donate $120,000 and 2,000 spring meal boxes to the Food Bank of Iowa. These meals will be distributed to families in need through Des Moines Public Schools. Each meal kit includes one ham, Bisquick baking mix, potatoes au gratin, canned pineapple, canned corn, gelatin, and brownie mix. On top of that, the remaining funds from the donation- approximately $80,000- will allow the Food Bank of Iowa to purchase even more food to go on inventory for pantry partners in 55 Iowa counties. Emily Shearer, senior manager of food acquisition and advocacy with the Food Bank of Iowa, said the freedom and flexibility with this gift is greatly appreciated.
Rob Stevenson, director of corporate outreach and employee engagement, said they are excited for the opportunity to support food insecure families in Des Moines with those spring meal boxes.
Fareway Regional Vice President Tom Laven said giving back to local communities fits right in with their mission to “lead with love.”
Laven added that they also took the opportunity to get competitive and have some fun with the packing process at the Food Bank of Iowa last week.
