Mexico announced that by 2024, they would ban imports of U.S. corn that?s been genetically modified or grown using glyphosate almost two years ago. With how important Mexico?s relationship is to the U.S., ag leaders have been trying to find ways to keep trade strong between the two countries. Grant Menke, Iowa Corn Growers Association director of market development, talked about how this ban will affect the economies of both countries if it goes through.
Mexico?s decision is confusing considering the fact that there?s no evidence of any negative impacts from GMOs. In fact, Menke said they?re ignoring the many positive benefits of genetic modification.
While Americans are also facing food cost issues, people in Mexico have it much worse, with some families spending half of their income on food. Menke said GMOs would be able to help alleviate that pressure.
Menke said they?re working on sharing the story of U.S. agriculture and GMOs by hosting with trade teams from other countries.
Menke added that the ICGA staff are always available to talk about all things corn.
