The drought monitor has seen a slight improvement due to precipitation from the spring weather. Unfortunately, some of that precipitation has come in the form of severe weather, which can bring as much harm as it does good. Iowa State Climatologist Dr. Justin Glisan provided an update on the latest drought conditions for the state.
At the beginning of the month, we were wondering if it would enter like a lamb and exit like a lion. After the severe weather from this past weekend, we can now say that it definitely exited like a lion. Glisan said that weather outbreak even included a tornado that achieved an EF4 rating.
It would be nice to have a break from the severe weather, but Glisan said that tomorrow?s outbreak is looking similar.
At the very least, we can be glad that last week was Severe Weather Awareness week, which reminded many people of how to be prepared for intense storms.
Glisan said these storms are brought in by low pressure systems, which also tend to bring cold air- and possibly snow- behind them.
Glisan added that these next few months are the wettest of the year, so he encourages producers to get in touch with the Iowa Climatology Bureau and report their precipitation amounts.
