Senator Chuck Grassley (R-IA) has said in recent weeks that he thinks a one-year extension to the current 2018 farm bill is more likely to take place than the agreement and adoption of a new five-year farm bill.
This week David Scott (D-GA), the ranking member of the House Agriculture Committee, called on colleagues to extend the 2018 Farm Bill by one year. He made the call to offer certainty and support to farmers, ranchers, and foresters as he says “extremism” in the House Republican conference continues hobbling legislative efforts.
Senator Grassley was asked during his weekly ag conference call with reporters on Tuesday about whether he thinks more high-ranking members of Congress will soon join the push for a one-year farm bill extension.
In the second week of August, Senator Grassley spoke with the Iowa Agribusiness Radio Network at the Iowa State Fair and was optimistic in his hopes of agreement on a new five-year farm bill. He says that his optimism has continued to decline since Congress returned from its Congressional recess in early September.
Senator Grassley was also asked if he would like to push for any policy riders to go along with a one-year extension of the farm bill.
Senator Grassley made his comments on Tuesday morning during his weekly ag conference call.
