At this time of year, our crops are pollinating, and we need the weather to cooperate in order to make sure our yields can be as high as possible. Since we have plenty of moisture in the soil, it’s mostly up to the temperatures to cooperate. Nate Meyer, southwest Iowa Beck’s agronomist, said there were some concerns with the high temps we saw over the weekend, but the forecast looks mostly good from here on out.
On top of pollination, disease pressure is a concern at this time of year. While tar spot is always an issue, Meyer said that he hasn’t seen a lot of disease pressure when scouting in his area. But even though there isn’t really a specific disease to target, a late-season fungicide application will help to keep those crops healthy.
Meyer said there’s also a wide application window for fungicide application across the state right now, as we had a very wide planting season this past spring.
Meyer added that soybean farmers should look at using fungicide products with boron this year, as they have seen success from that in their own studies.
