Last Thursday, the European Parliament gave its approval to an agreement reached at the White House back in August. This agreement gives the United States country-specific access to the European Union?s (EU) duty-free high-quality beef quota. This agreement could triple duty-free exports to the EU over the next seven years.
U.S. Meat Export Federation (USMEF) President and CEO Dan Halstrom says the agreement?s approval will allow the U.S. to get a share of the duty-free quota that is normally eaten up by our competitors.
Halstrom says as much as this provides certainty for consumers, it is a bigger step towards stability for the processors and producers.
The agreement ends a long-time struggle for the U.S. beef export market. No longer will there be a worry of quota amounts from quarter to quarter.
