Employing a proactive approach to get ahead of tar spot

by | May 23, 2025 | 5 Ag Stories, News

The fungal disease, tar spot, continues to expand each year across the corn growing regions of the United States. One of the biggest problems brought on by tar spot is that it has a latency period of 14-20 days. That is the time in between which the plant has been infected by tar spot and the visible symptoms begin to emerge. This creates problems for growers as many times symptoms will not be noticeable until it is already too late and significant damage has already occurred.

Kim Tutor is a technical marketing manager for BASF and says that it is important for farmers to have a proactive management plan instead of reactive when dealing with tar spot.

She says a well-rounded plan is the best way to take on tar spot this growing season.

Tutor explains when growers need to be scouting for tar spot in their plants.
