The 2020 harvest continues to fly by in Iowa leaving plenty of time for fall field work. Calcium Products can help growers with their sulfur fertilizer applications.
Sulfur is an essential component of plant growth and is often considered the fourth major nutrient behind N, P, and K. Andrew Hoiberg is vice president of research and development at Calcium Products. He says SO4 pelletized gypsum from Calcium Products supplies a strong initial release of sulfur followed by a steady supply throughout the growing season, delivering the right of amount of sulfur to perfectly match plant needs for yield-maximizing plant growth.
?It has a lot better staying power in the soil than something like ammonium sulfate does,? Hoiberg said. ?If you are applying AMS in the fall, there is a good chance your crop is not going to have what it needs the following season. Corn and soybeans both really need sulfur all the way throughout the growing season. By choosing SO4, you are providing the right level of solubility of that sulfur into the soil.?
According to the company?s website, SO4 is mined and manufactured in northwest Iowa from one of the purest gypsum sources in the world. Hoiberg says SO4 can be applied pre-plant in the spring, in-season via top dress or post-harvest in the fall.
?The other part of SO4 is you don?t have any degradation of the soil quality,? Hoiberg said. ?Other sulfur fertilizers cause acidification in the soil, but SO4 is a pH neutral sulfur source, so it?s actually more of a beneficial application because of the calcium that comes along with it as well.?
There are plenty more benefits from utilizing SO4 that you can read about on Calcium Products? website, calciumproducts.com. Listen to Andrew Hoiberg’s full interview on our pH Matters program below.
