Dairy industry looking to make some market reforms as well

We have been hearing much about the need for market reform in the beef industry and the debates that have been going along with that. Producers are questioning how much market share is too much when only four packers call the shots on 85% of the marketplace.

Beef isn?t the only market that has had its share of concerns. Dairy usually finds itself as an annual whipping boy for the markets. While dairy farms are disappearing at an alarming rate, one organization is putting forth a list of market reform ideas.

Edge Dairy Farmer Cooperative is one of the largest dairy co-ops in the country. They have announced their priorities for reforming the federal milk pricing system, putting stressors on flexibility and fairness. Edge CEO Tim Trotter says that these two principles are the base they are building on.

This is not a new discussion that is being had. It has been brewing for several years. However, the pandemic raised red flags about the urgency for reform according to Edge. Board member Mitch Davis says that their proposal accounts for differences in product mixes across the country.

Dr. Marin Bozic is a dairy economist who advises the Edge board of directors. He says the industry is changing. We are exporting more than ever.

Bozic says it is time to get back to the basics.
