We?ll have to hold out a little while longer before the Mississippi River receives any relieving rain, as drought conditions have worsened across the board for the state of Iowa. In fact, the entire state is now experiencing some form of drought. Iowa State Climatologist Dr. Justin Glisan explained the data from this week?s U.S. Drought Monitor.
Fortunately, Glisan said there?s some rain in the 7-day forecast, which could get us started on replenishing our soil and, ultimately, raising the levels of the Mississippi River back up.
Glisan said we?ll need all the moisture we can get before the soil freezes this winter.
We have experienced some wintry freezes already, as Glisan said we are now on the other side of a Canadian air mass- often referred to as an Alberta clipper.
However, since the corn and soybeans in Iowa are all mature already, Glisan said we avoided any damage that could?ve been cause by those freezes.
